South View of the Hannah Cheever House

Hannah Cheever, the innkeeper at nearby Sugartown Inn, built this 2 ½-story, four-bay dwelling c. 1835.  The structure provides the student with an unusual example of post and beam construction.  The mortised oak timbers were covered with wood lath and stuccoed with a pebble-dashed mortar finish.  It was built as a hall and parlor plan dwelling with a center staircase.  A one-room, two-story stone wing, which was added to the north, contains a cooking fireplace with a large brick-lined bake oven extending through the north wall.
